| The Northern Territories and The Shiretoko Mountains are covered with snow. On the 1st of January, we have ¡ÆHatsumoude¡Ç at Nosappu Peninsula In early February, we have a snow festival called ¡ÆLake Furen Heart Land Festival¡Ç at Lake Furen, which is well known for its swans. In this season, you can spot the king of birds, Steller¡Çs Sea Eagle, foxes and so on. You can also see fishermen ice fishing on the lake and setting traps to catch fish. You can spot sea otters from Cape Nosappu. It is lovely to see them eat sea urchins or crabs which are floating on the sea. In the middle of February, the floats, which are formed in the Amour River in Russia, travel 13,000km and arrive at Cape Nosappu, and stay there until the middle of April.
There are many stories told about how skating began. It is possible that
skating began in Nemuro. The record says that in 1792, when the Russian
messenger, Adam Laxman, flied to Nemuro for the request of commerce, he
skated on the Nemuro Port. The old skate shoes were like ¡ÆGeta (Japanese
traditional shoes)¡Ç. |
